Cornflower Blue Sapphire are a variety of corundum. They are composed of aluminum oxide and trace elements, which give them their color. The gemstone is known as “cornflower” blue because of its distinctive shade. Cornflower blue sapphires are a medium-blue color that is similar to the petals on the cornflower flower.
Cornflower Blue Sapphire has a rich history as colorful as it is. The gemstones were treasured by ancient Persia, and Sri Lanka, as they protected their wearers against envy and harm. Rathnapura is Sri Lanka’s most famous source for cornflower sapphires. Sri Lankan sapphires, discovered in the late nineteenth century, set the standard of what is considered to be the perfect shade of blue sapphires.
